Consultation & Supervision

What Types of Consultation Are Available?

Consultation is provided to other mental health professionals (e.g., psychologists, social workers, counselors, therapists) who are seeking to add skills to their practice, an additional opinion for a client, or mentorship. Dr. Chrissy provides a variety of consultation options:

  • EMDR Consultation: Whether you are a new trainee fresh from basic training or looking for an additional perspective in a new-to-you area, Dr. Chrissy is a Consultant-in-Training (CIT) and available to provide both individual and group consultation. She has knowledge of and completed additional trainings in the areas of Attachment-Focused EMDR (AF-EMDR), Structural Dissociation Theory, Ego State Interventions, EFT Tapping, and Polyvagal Theory (including the Safe and Sound Protocol). She works mostly with complex trauma, including repairing poor attachment relationships and with dissociative disorders.

  • Trauma-Informed Care: Working with trauma can be overwhelming, especially if this is a new area. There is so much to learn and many aspects of trauma are only briefly touched upon during graduate school and initial training opportunities. If you are seeking a deeper dive into case conceptualization, a broader understanding of how trauma impacts your clients, or a fresh set of eyes on why a specific treatment may not be working as well as expected, Dr. Chrissy is happy to talk this over and provide resources. With experiences of all ages and in a variety of settings (inpatient, outpatient, residential treatment centers, group homes, foster homes, etc), Dr. Chrissy has a strong foundation in trauma throughout the lifespan.

  • Review of Psychological Evaluation: Have you ever read a psychological evaluation provided to one of your clients and couldn’t understand what it meant? Psychological testing is a highly developed skill and, unfortunately, not all reports are written in a clear and understandable format. Dr. Chrissy offers the opportunity to review the report and provide easy to understand information about what the results mean.

  • Private Practice: Starting up your own private practice can seem intimidating. There is so much to learn about and many steps to get up and running! If you would like to chat with an experienced business owner, especially about potential pitfalls, reach out.

What is the Difference Between Consultation and Supervision?

The biggest difference between consultation and supervision is the responsibility for the client. In consultation, the consultee remains the responsible party for their client and makes all related treatment decisions. The consultant offers advice, suggestions, and knowledge for the consultee to consider, but the client is never the responsibility of the consultant. In supervision, the consultant is often legally and ethically responsible for the client. This often occurs because the supervisee is not fully licensed and requires the supervision as part of the educational or licensing process. In supervision, the supervisor makes the final call on difficult decisions and may explicitly instruct the supervisee on how to move forward. Supervision is often paid for by the school or agency where the supervisee works.

Types of Consultation & Supervision Relationships

Consultation is available on an on-going or as needed basis. At the outset of the consultation, both parties should discuss whether the consultation is intended for regularly scheduled meetings or on a case-by-case basis.

Because of the inherent responsibility of the supervisor within the supervision relationship, supervision is only provided in an extended relationship. There should be a clear indication of how long supervision is needed and when the relationship is intended to end. However, “one shot” or “intermittent” supervision on an as needed basis is not offered.

How Much Does It Cost?

Costs of consultation and supervision vary based on the time needed. A good base estimate is $250 per hour, with some sliding scale available for students, new graduates, and group consultation. Please reach out directly to Dr. Chrissy at drchrissy@mindfulpsychology.us for a quote.
